A good deal of interest has lately been manifested in the Southern States of this Country in the matter of importing Coolies from China for the purpose of supplying the great demand for labour which exists in that portion of the United States. The impossibility of obtaining so much labour from the negro now in a state of freedom as was extracted from him as a slave, even amongst the most industrious, and the idle habits which have followed upon his emancipation, and which it may require some time to correct, have forced the planters to consider whence additional labour can be supplied, and their attention has been turned to China.
There is no doubt, however, that a great portion of the Population of this Country is opposed to immigration from China. Some fear that when the stream...
